Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Monday, 12 March 2012

Question 6

What have you learnt about technologies form the process of contructing this product?

Mac: I learn't that using this computer, I could work quickly and effectively compared to other computers. We used this computer to edit, script write and produce our production schedule.

Imovie: Using imovie allow me to edit our film quickly and effectively however I do feel that imovie personally was not the right editing software for me as it had limited transitions, special effects and techneqiues which made our film seem very general.

Celtx: this software allowed us to write a scrpit quickly and professionally. It was a new software to me so it was something new i learnt to use very quickly and would use again if nessary.

Canon Camera: I learnt how to use this camera which is a close identical to many professional camera's used. I have used recording camera's before but this camera allow me to grasp a clear recording needed for the media product. I also learnt many techneciques which were effective in the process of making the media product e.g. white balance adjustment and focussing.

Tripod: I have used a tripod before and it allowed us to capture a balanced still shots need for the establishing shots of the media product.

Lights: Something new to be was the use of lights to deliever a extra element to our film. We mainly used this in your house scene to give various effects like using colour screens to make it seem like natural morning light.

Question 5:

How did you attract/address your audience?

As our target audience is 16-24 year old, we mainly need to attract them by using common media hubs used by them. Through our research we found that our target audience mainly us the Internet as a source of discovering new films, we intend use these media hubs such as Facebook and Youtube to make our audience aware of a film they cannot miss. Using publicity such as behind the scene's videos and interviews with Directors or actors this may help to create excitement and awareness of our film as our target market is influenced by getting more than the actual film experience. Emphasising the fact this is a fully British film may encourage people to spread this film through word of mouth and using the locations where our film such as the park as somewhere to place our advertising such as posters could make the film more relatable and real for our audience. Also advertising on TV channels which our audience regularly watch such as channel 4 and E4 can attract our audience which has been seen by the success of independent films such as Four Lions and The Iron Lady.

QUESTION 3:

WHAT KIND OF INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?

Our film 'Another Day' has all the credentials of a independent teen Rom-com which could to be compared to films such as '17 Again' 'Juno' and 'John Tucker Must Die'. All of this films have an American element which our film embraces but subverts the typical American storyline our film is based on but enforcing a strong British theme throughout. This is what makes our film independent, being able to target a direct market/audience and have the capability to adapt the film to audience rather than adapting the film to make a large profit.

Film4 is a British film distribution company and would be an ideal distributor of our film as they are an experienced company and have developed to the change in technology to promote their films. An example of a film distributed by film4 is 'The Iron Lady' which won a BAFTA Award. Film4 is owned by channel 4 which is a popular TV station amongst our teenage audience through shows such as 'hollyoaks'. These resource can be used by film4 to distribute our film.

On the other hand I do believe that our film can be distributed to the mass market. If it was to be distributed widely a company such as 20th Century Fox would be a perfect choice due to their ability to attract the mass audience through media hubs such as facebook and youtube which would be an effective way to attract our audience seen in our research. '500 Day of Summer' was a film distributed by 20th Century Fox which had an independent feel to the film, using this as an example I think 20th Century Fox could be a company to distribute our film.

Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social group?

Rick Flame vs. John Tucker

Rick Flame
John Tucker

Rick Flame is the stereotypical ladies man who can be compared to John Tucker who is the main character of the Rom-Com 'John Tucker must Die'. These two character share the trates showing that our character Rick conforms to the stereotypical social group in which character like Ned will not fit into. Are film clearly outlines the boarder between social groups where you have the 'cool' people and the 'outsiders' (nerds), but we see the boarder broken when characters have a transition form outsider to cool kid. This transition is seen in John Tucker but his statues falls and his social group changes, a simular transition happens to Rick Flame in our film showing we conform to the stereotypical views on social groups.

Question 1: 9 Frame Analysis of 'Another Day'

The title of the film:
The title of our film is 'Another Day,' the title is introduced at the end of the film. This is done because we wanted to foreshadow the meaning of the film which is the day after an evert (what event? watch the film..) and to also draw the audience in.

Setting/Location:
In our film we use a range of shots from a variety of locations to give the viewer a sense of morning. These shots are juxtaposed with the house scene where the viewer gets a sense of the 'morning after the night before'. We used the lively morning shots of buses, trains, markets and people commuting to work to show that people are starting 'Another' new day and are busy where as the main characters are still in darkness and living the night before (party). This setting reflects our genre of teen rom-com as it is slow paced (editing/shots) rather than fast paced action.

Costumes and Props:
Costumes and props are mainly used in the house scene of our film. This is the scene where out main characters are introduced and the audience establishes their first impressions of the characters so the customes must reflect the stereotype we intend to put across. We achieved this by showing Ned Flame (main character) in glasses and also wearing braces to conform to the stereotype of a nerd where as we have Rick Flame in a T-Shirt and jeans, looking casual and giving a cool personer to the viewer. We used props such as Cups, Alcohol bottles and a passed out girl on the floor to show the viewer a party has taken place and our characters are in the after-math.

Camerawork/Editing:
Our camerawork consists of slow panning and medium to long range shots which is conventional to our genre. This allows the viewer to see clearly what is happening in the scene and sets the pace of the film. We also used this in our editing, although transition methods were limited we mainly stuck to cross dissolves and blurs to make a natural transition effect to the edit so the audience feels at ease and comfortable immidently.

 Title font and style:

We used a title font called 'American Typewritter' which we downloaded from a website. We used this to give an American type theme to the title's which we can see in our story/script. By using this font style the audience may feel that this film has simularities to other films they have seen with this genre which may settle the audience and reassure the expectation the viewers have of our film.

Story and how the opening sets it up:
Our film is the story of two brothers who are the complete opposites (one a ladies man and the other a geek). This subverts the initial idea seen in most films of a simular nature, most films have these two characters unrelated and hardly interact where as in our film these two characters must invetiable interact as they have an inseperbal bond. In our opening we see the different worlds of the two brothers. The ladies man (Rick) doing what he does best compared to the geek (Ned) working in the early hours of the morning.

Genre & how the opening suggests it:
Our genre is Teen rom-com. This genre tend to have a young cast (16-24) which makes it apeal to our target market (16-24). We use these aspects in our film which is seen in the opening of our film witht the main characters and extra's, as they are all young it suggest that the rest of the film will consist of young characters which is convetional of the genre.

How characters are introduced:
Most of the characters are introduced in different ways, the first character we're introduced to is the girl who we see walking down the stairs. As she is walking down we're also introduced to one of our main characters 'Rick Flames' who she kisses as she makes her way down suggets that these two character have just come from the bedroom showing the nature of Rick. The second main character 'Ned Flames' is introduced using a panning shot of him watching t.v rather than the implided sounds the audience initially hear, by doing this the audience then get an understanding of his character and the type of person he is.

Special effects:
Using special effects to help us transition to different moments smoothly, but doing so we did discover some problems, some of the transitions didn't work very well with some of the clips that we had. So we use very natural tranistions to give a calm and soft effect to the viewer. The main tranistion  we used was cross dissolved to give the natural feel experienced in the morning.

Napoleon Dynamiteis a possible theme for our opening title..

If we was to do this instead of using food, we shall use books to suit our character, Ned Flame.
I'm unsure if the editing software we currently use can do this so we will wait and see but if all goes well it should be pretty sweet.

Possible Film opening?

So I recently watched the film Trading Places staring Eddie Murphy. This is a great film which challenges societies social groups (Rich and Poor) and the opening reflects our scripts opening very well. Unfortunately I couldn't find the film opening but here's the trailer.....
I think this may be the film we refer to while filming our final film.

Script!

Next step on our road to success was to come of with a good idea
So we noticed almost every rom-com has a guy after a guy and ends up getting the girl, i know cheesy right?
So we decided to subvert the main conventions and have two main characters who are men.
Brothers to be more clear, instead of have a standard boy and a girl. By doing this i hope to include women as secondary characters/support characters and to later become lead roles but its only a 2 minute film.
So we developed a script and storyboard.....
First draft of our script....

I know it's not a Rom-Com

I am aware it isn't a Rom-com but this film embeds the brothers theme we have in our film...

New task - Film opening

I'm back from my absence....
So my next task with my team is to make a 2 minute opening to a movie.
Most initial ideas of genre were to go with the main types:

  • Action
  • Comedy
  • Crime
  • Romance
  • Horror
I thought it may be best to attempt of fuse to genres to have something different form most external blogs i have seen. Also i wanted to challenge and push the boundaries of my resources.
Leading to the decision to make a ROMANTIC COMEDY...
